THE FUNCTIONAL ROLE OF LITERARY PORTRAIT IN O. HENRY’S THE GIFT OF THE MAGI

Abstract

This article explores the functional role of literary portrait in The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. The study aims to identify how portrait elements contribute to character development, narrative progression, and thematic expression. Using qualitative textual analysis, the research examines the portrayal of the main characters through physical, psychological, and symbolic details. The findings show that literary portrait in the story performs multiple functions: it reveals the inner world of the characters, reflects their social conditions, and serves as a key mechanism in constructing the plot. Special attention is given to symbolic elements such as Della’s hair and Jim’s watch, which enhance the emotional and ironic effect of the narrative. The study concludes that literary portrait is not merely descriptive, but plays a central role in conveying the theme of love and self-sacrifice.
